The Creek, Dubai

The Creek - a natural sea-water inlet which cuts through the centre of the city is historically the focal point of life in Dubai. Strolling along the riverbanks it is easy to imagine Dubai as a bustling trader port just a few centuries ago. Visitors will be enthralled by the vibrancy and bustle surrounding the dhows which still travel ancient trade routes to places as distant as India and East Africa. For the foot-sore, a pleasant way to experience the Creek and all the life it contains is from an abra, one of the small water taxis which cross from the north to the south sides of the Creek.

It is also well worth taking an hour-long trip on an abra to the mouth of the Creek and inland to the Maktoum Bridge, passing on the way many of the city's historic and contemporary landmarks. The Creek's banks are continually changing with the city. On the Deira side, a broad and paved promenade extends from the Corniche, which faces onto the Arabian Gulf, all the way to the attractive dhow terminal constructed beside Maktoum Bridge.

On the Bur Dubai side between Maktoum and Garhoud bridges, life passes more slowly by, the Creekside Park providing pleasant walks and landscaped gardens. For the birdwatcher, the wildlife sanctuary and the inland end of the Creek offers the opportunity to spot migrating shore birds.
