Mosques in Dubai |
|||||||||||||||||
To even begin to understand Arab and Islamic culture, a visit to one of Dubai's awe- inspiring mosques is not to be missed. Many are modern structures, but are in keeping with Islamic traditional architecture while providing a contemporary space of worship. One of the city's finest and largest mosques is the Jumeirah Mosque. Among Dubai's most photographed sights, the mosque is a stunning example of modern Islamic architecture, its majestic dome and twin minarets being city landmarks. Built in the medieval Fatimid replica style, the Jumeirah Mosque should be viewed at night when delicate lighting illuminates the exterior. It is possible to undertake a tour and enjoy a Q & A session regarding U.A.E. culture and religion, but visitors must be mindful to dress conservatively and women must wear headscarves. The Grand Mosque, situated on the Bur Dubai side of the Creek is also well worth a visit. Rebuilt in 1998, it holds the honour of having at 70 meters the city's tallest minaret. Just a glance from one side to the other can in fact take minutes, as the Grand Mosque has 45 small domes in addition to 9 large ones. For the citizens of Dubai, the Grand Mosque is an important place of worship and for the visitor it is a fun place to 'people-watch'. Be sure to also watch out for the smaller mosques which are cunningly located between buildings – some are architectural gems on a miniature scale.
