The Souks |

In line with its value, the lanes of the gold souk are slightly larger. Each shop window is crammed with gold jewellery of every description – rings, earrings, necklaces, bangles, watches and amulets. The area opens into the evening, providing a welcome diversion for anyone who needs a change from bars and restaurants. Nearby, shops can also be found selling other notorious local products - nargilehs (hookah pipes) and coffee pots. Time out should also be taken at the nearby tea stalls where both of these items are in daily use. Sample the traditional large flat loaves of delicious unleavened bread, baked to order inside a domed oven called a Tandoor. With a full belly, step in to the small textile shops on the Bur Dubai side of the Creek selling veils with decorated edges, 'genie' style pantaloons with embroidered anklets, and dress lengths with embroidered necklines reminiscent of 'The Arabian Nights'. The fish souk in Deira makes a day out in itself. Arrive in the morning and evenings to watch local fishermen unload mountains of fresh fish which they sell in a frenzied bargaining session. Kingfish, red snapper, rock cod, barracuda, lobster, crab, king prawn, shark, mackerel and other species are available in abundance for most of the year.
